Dopamine Nation: Overabundance Keeps Us Craving More (Fresh Air interview)

Aug 2021 🇺🇸 NPR / Fresh Air

In this August 2021 Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, Stanford addiction psychiatrist Anna Lembke discusses her book Dopamine Nation and extends its framework to everyday digital habits. Asked directly whether people become addicted to phones and social media, Lembke says she believes they can, describing smartphones as built to be highly stimulating through features like infinite scrolling. She situates phone and social-media use alongside gambling, video games, and pornography as behaviors that can follow the same reward-and-withdrawal pattern associated with substance use, and describes patients' device use increasing during COVID-19 lockdowns. She also raises concern that constant device use may be linked to teenagers losing the ability to sustain attention. TechKids Foundation cites this interview for its accessible explanation of the clinical addiction framework applied to phones and social media.
