Witness Evidence at the Inquest into the Death of Molly Russell

Sep 2022 🇬🇧 The National

Suicide and self-harm are complex and never caused by one factor alone. Problematic screen use, cyberbullying, harmful content, and online exploitation may increase risk or intensify existing distress. If someone is in immediate danger or emotional crisis in the United States, call or text 988.

In September 2022, Andrew Walker, senior coroner for North London, concluded a multi-week inquest into the 2017 death of fourteen-year-old Molly Russell, finding that she died from an act of self-harm while suffering from depression and 'the negative effects of online content.' Her father, Ian Russell, gave witness evidence during the proceedings about changes he observed in his daughter before her death, as the inquest examined thousands of images and videos — some depicting suicide and self-harm — that she had viewed on Instagram and Pinterest. Following the verdict, Russell spoke publicly outside court, calling the coroner's conclusions an important step toward change. TechKids Foundation cites this as the first UK case in which a coroner formally linked a teenager's death to online content exposure, understood as association rather than a single determined cause, since suicide and self-harm are never explained by one factor alone.
