Generation Wealth (book)
Generation Wealth is Lauren Greenfield's 2017 photographic monograph, published by Phaidon with a foreword by sociologist Juliet Schor, collecting more than 650 images from a 25-year project documenting the pursuit of wealth and status across Los Angeles, Moscow, Dubai, and China. The 504-page book frames its subject as 'the desire to be wealthy, at any cost' rather than the wealthy themselves, tracing a line from 1990s conspicuous consumption through the 2008 financial crash to a global culture in which celebrity, luxury goods, and physical image are treated as measures of success. Reviewers have connected the book's portraits — including of teenagers steeped in celebrity and consumer culture — with body-image pressure and status anxiety associated with growing up around status-driven media. TechKids Foundation cites the book as the photographic foundation for Greenfield's later documentary and television work on media, image, and youth.
