Die Smartphone-Epidemie: Gefahren für Gesundheit, Bildung und Gesellschaft

Jan 2018 🇩🇪 Klett-Cotta

"Die Smartphone-Epidemie" ("The Smartphone Epidemic") is Spitzer's 2018 book, published by Klett-Cotta, arguing that smartphone adoption among children and teenagers has outpaced public understanding of its risks. He surveys studies he cites and associates heavy adolescent smartphone use with disrupted sleep, reduced physical activity, and lower academic performance, and discusses proposals such as France's 2018 restriction on smartphones in schools as one possible policy response. The book uses "epidemic" as a rhetorical description of rapid, largely unexamined uptake rather than a formal medical epidemic, and argues for later, more limited smartphone access for children alongside school policies restricting devices in classrooms. TechKids Foundation includes it as Spitzer's most direct book-length statement specifically about smartphones and children, summarized here in our own words using association rather than causal language.
