Facebook Will Not Fix Itself

Oct 2021 🇺🇸 TIME

Writing in TIME days after whistle-blower Frances Haugen's Senate testimony and the leak of Facebook's internal research, Roger McNamee argues that the company's record shows it will not reform voluntarily. He frames the business model as surveillance-driven — platforms profit by predicting and steering behavior — and repeats his argument that engagement-tuned algorithms amplify fear and outrage because those emotions hold attention. McNamee credits Haugen's documents with transforming the reform debate and calls for legislation on three fronts: product-safety standards for technology, including an FDA-style review body; privacy limits on the use of sensitive data; and antitrust enforcement, rather than trusting the industry to police itself. TechKids Foundation includes this essay as McNamee's post-Facebook Papers policy argument that harms associated with engagement-driven design are a product-safety problem for legislators, not a public-relations problem for platforms.
