Why AI Is Our Ultimate Test and Greatest Invitation
In this TED2025 talk, Tristan Harris argues that how societies choose to deploy artificial intelligence is a choice rather than an inevitability, drawing an explicit comparison to what he characterizes as social media's poorly governed rollout. He frames rapid, competitively driven AI deployment as carrying foreseeable risks — including for young people's information environments and development — that went largely unaddressed in the social-media era until harms were already widespread, and calls for pairing AI's growing capability with commensurate investment in safeguards, oversight, and public deliberation. The talk is an argument-driven presentation rather than a data-driven study. TechKids Foundation includes it as Harris's most recent widely distributed synthesis of his design-ethics critique applied to AI, relevant to this library's ai-confusion and policy categories.
